How much to spend on a Mountain Bike?
So you fancy a bike - but are unsure just how much money you need to spend? Well firstly you need to think about what type of riding you will be doing. Is it purely a fitness thing? Bit of fresh air, exercise with the family or are you a hardcore rider. The rule of thumb is this:
less than £100 - Very basic bike, likely to break if use hard - not recommended
£100 - £250 - Decent, again if used a lot will be likely to break or components will need replacing.
£250 - £500 - This is the level where parts become easier to replace and generally you will expect the bike to perform well over tme
£500 - £1000 - Parts of the bike start to get lighter, and you can expect the bike to be light enough and good enough for long all day riding. Bike parts for these bikes are easier to find and cheaper to replace for the level of performance on offer.
£1000+ - At this level front suspension bikes start to become very light indeed. Full suspension bikes are still on the heavy side, so expect to pay around £2000 for a decent light full suspension bike designed for all day riding.

Getting into Mountain Biking - where to start?
The easiest bit, it has to be said, is buying your bike. The act of mountain biking is a little more challenging. There is a whole host of kit that you need (some of it a luxury) but much of it fairly important. Before you go off road it is really important to get yourself a helmet - many riders have bad crashes, it goes with the territory - and it's vital to protect your head. Even a slow speed crash with a direct impact on your head can have serious issues - especially if you are miles from help.
